Sorbus aucuparia or Mountain Ash is native to the Uk. and much of Northern Europe. A small to medium size, upright, deciduous tree that is well known for its ornamental qualities. In antiquity the tree has long been associated with the deterrence of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The wood was used to stir milk to prevent it curdling and is still used today to make divining rods. The berries, while edible, to humans are sour, however they have a high vitamin C content and can be made into jelly that is good eaten with meat. Sorbus aucuparia Rossica Major is a selection of the variety edulis. Large, attractive, dark green, pinnate, deeply and regularly toothed leaves emerge from greyish, downy winter buds and are held on red stems, turning orange reds in a good autumn. White flowers, attractive to bees and butterflies, are produced in dense corymbs in May and are followed in autumn by large clusters of vibrant, bright red fruits. The fruit is a favourite with hungry birds! Easy to grow in full sun or semi shade in most soils. Sorbus aucuparia Rossica Major will not live very long on thin chalky soils, but is renowned for its tolerance to extreme acid soil. A superb garden tree that can also be grown in a pot or other container. Pot using a John Innes compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. These plants have been stopped at approx. one mtr to encourage short trunk, branching plants. This listing is for grafted plants in a 3 L pot, 80- 100cm tall excluding the pot.
