Pot Size Guide

Not sure what pot size means? Here's everything you need to know about the sizes we use and which plants they're suited to.

Size by Size

Each size below refers to the pot the plant is currently growing in when dispatched. Larger pots mean more established root systems and bigger plants.

9cm
~9cm wide
~8cm deep

Best For

Young plugs, alpines & small perennials

Our smallest size — ideal starter plants. Perfect for ground cover, rockeries, or potting on into a larger container at home.

Starter plant
1L
~11cm wide
~10cm deep

Best For

Herbs, small perennials & compact shrubs

A good all-rounder. Well-rooted and ready to plant straight into the garden or a larger pot. Great value for filling gaps.

Ready to plant
2L
~13cm wide
~12cm deep

Best For

Perennials, grasses & small ferns

Established plants with a strong root system. Will make an immediate impact in borders. Popular choice for most herbaceous plants.

Established
3L
~17cm wide
~14cm deep

Best For

Shrubs, large ferns & climbing plants

A solid, well-developed plant. Ideal for feature positions in borders, patio containers, or training up structures. Establishes quickly.

Feature plant
5L
~22cm wide
~19cm deep

Best For

Larger shrubs, roses & specimen plants

Mature, substantial plants that create instant impact. The root ball is well established — expect visible growth in the first season.

Specimen plant

~22cm deep

Best For

Mature shrubs & small ornamental trees

Excellent for statement plantings. A bigger root system means faster establishment and less aftercare required during the first year.

~26cm deep

Best For

Trees, large shrubs & hedging

Large, well-established plants with significant presence. Ideal for focal points, hedgerows, or when you want an immediate mature look.

Planting Tips

  • Water before planting — always soak the root ball in water for 20–30 minutes before putting it in the ground.
  • Bigger isn't always better — smaller plants often establish faster and can catch up with larger specimens within a season.
  • Match pot to planting hole — dig a hole at least twice the width of the pot for best results.
  • Aftercare matters most — water regularly for the first year regardless of pot size, especially in dry spells.
