The exact origin of Sorbus Chinese Lace is not known however it is thought to be a cross between Sorbus aspleniifolia and Sorbus esserteauana that may have arisen in Kew Gardens. Sorbus Chinese Lace is a superb compact, round headed, deciduous, very hardy tree and one of the finest ornamental garden trees. Deeply cut, lacey foliage with mid green, pinnate leaflets are beautifully serrated, producing a charming lacy effect. In autumn they turn stunning shades of orange, yellow, russet, red and purple. During May and June corymbs of fluffy white flowers appear, which are popular with bees and butterflies. The flowers are followed by masses of orangey red berries which provide a lovely spectacle and a feast for birds throughout the winter. Altogether a charming small tree that is ideal for gardens where space is limited or for growing in a pot or container. Easy to grow in full sun or semi shade in most soils, although Sorbus Chinese Lace will not thrive in thin chalky soils. When growing in a pot. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade, become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soil based compost. These plants have been stopped at approx. one mtr to encourage short trunk, branching plants. This listing is for grafted plants in a 3 L pot, 60 - 90cm tall excluding the pot.
