Arguably one of the most beautiful of all flowering shrubs originally introduced from east Asia they have long been part of the British gardening scene. Crimson and Gold is rather more compact variety but still one of the best red flowering varieties which has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. The glowing red cup shaped flowers are born in early spring just before the leaves appear and have an attractive central array of golden yellow stamens. The flowers are often followed in autumn by golden yellow aromatic fruits*. Traditionally grown against a wall but just as at home as a semi-prostrate plant in the border a Quince is a must for early spring colour. If you grow in a container use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. To display at its best provide some supports/wires and train the branches laterally. This plant is a fast grower so unless you have lots of room will likely require some hard pruning to keep it in check! This should be done immediately after it has flowered. *While these fruits are edible they are best used for Jam making. The true edible Quince is called Cydonia oblonga. This listing is for second year, multi branched plants, that have been pruned to ensure further branching next spring.
