Euonymus europaeus or Spindle trees are native across much of Europe. Euonymus europaeus Red Cascade is a splendid cultivar that has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. A superb rich green leaved, deciduous shrub, that truly comes into its own in autumn when the foliage turns stunning vivid shades of scarlet and crimson. Once seen, you will understand why one of the common names is Burning Bush! The summer flowers are insignificant, but they result in abundant, very attractive fruits which split open to form four rich pink winged lobes with a bright orange seed at the centre and last on the plant well past leaf drop. Traditionally, the hard, creamy white wood of the Spindle tree has been used for many purposes, including making spindles for spinning wool, skewers, toothpicks, pegs, and knitting needles. Today, spindle timber is used to make high-quality charcoal for artists. Easy to grow in virtually any moist well drained soil and a sunny or semi shade location. When growing in a pot or container use a good quality compost. Hungry plants are poor performers, so we recommend adding a controlled release fertiliser of 8-9 months formulation annually. One application lasts the whole year. Pruning is seldom necessary but should be undertaken in early spring as necessary to control growth.
