Despite its common name, this remarkable plant is native to Western China, Tibet and Tadzhikistan and was introduced to the UK around 1883. Until recently this plant was called Polygonum. Fallopia baldschuanica is unrivaled when it comes to sheer speed of growth. In a hot sunny summer greenhouse, with good compost and water, it is possible to watch the tips grow! Given half reasonable growing conditions, this plant will cover whatever you plant it next to, with dense growth, in a very short time. A woody, hardy, deciduous, twining climber, with attractive ovate to heart shaped green leaves, opening bronze. In summer to late autumn large panicles of white, occasionally flushed pink, very fragrant flowers literally smother the plant. Will grow in almost any soil although the rate of growth is slower in poor soils. Can be grown in a pot. When growing in a pot or other container use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmocote 8-9 month applied in the late spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soil based compost.

These plants are in their second year with a sturdy woody frame however, we have to trim regularly to control their super rapid growth.
