Wisteria are very long lived. The oldest in the UK is a Wisteria sinensis that was planted in London in 1816 and is still flowering every year! Wisteria floribunda were first introduced in 1830 by Philip von Siebold from Japan and are rather more compact and slower growing than Wisteria sinensis. They are perhaps one of the most memorable of all our climbing plants. In full flower they literally cascade with large racemes of fragrant pea like flowers. Wisteria floribunda Alba is an elegant Japanese Wisteria producing superb racemes, up to 60cm long, of fragrant, pea-like, white with the faintest flush of lilac, flowers, in May and June. The attractive light green leaflets open bronze and turn yellow in autumn. Can be grown in the garden in a sunny or semi shade location in most fertile free draining soils. It can easily be grown in a pot. Wherever you plant it, it will need something to grow up! When growing in a pot or other container use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Please note: All our Wisteria are grafted plants. Cheaper seed or cutting raise plants will take approx. 15 years to flower. Grafted plants will flower in around 2 years.
