Viburnum opulus are indigenous to the Uk and much of Europe, North America, North and West Asia and North Africa. They are a vigorous and spreading shrub that luxuriate in wet boggy soil, such as the clay that covers much of the Uk. They will grow well in ordinary soil as well! Viburnum opulus Compactum is a superb, compact cultivar, producing large numbers of flower heads of white snowball like flowers in May and June. Sometimes, depending on weather, these age to pink. The flowers are attractive to butterflies. This is not the variety called Roseum or Sterile, which does not produce berries, therefore abundant clusters of bright, shiny red berries follow the flowers and are very attractive to birds. Berries often last well into winter. In autumn the leaves colour to beautiful light purples and orange shades. A superb shrub, easy to grow in sun or semi shade in most soils and excellent for boggy areas! Can be grown in a large pot. When growing in a pot or other container use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
