Stipa gigantea is unquestionably a master of grasses, if not of all garden plants and one of my personal favourites! Originating throughout southern Europe and parts of North Africa, it is adapted to a life on dry rocky plains and mountainous slopes. An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, Stipa giagantea is at once a large imposing plant, with a light airy structure that shimmers in the sun and breeze but is open enough not to obscure the view beyond. The flowers are produced early, are on tall green stems held well above the handsome grey green foliage and begin with a purple hue turning to a beautiful golden brown. These persist on the plant well into winter and give this grass much of its endearing charm! Drought tolerant. Ideal as statement plant as part of a mixed border or in pots and containers. If planting in pots or containers use a John Innes based compost and ensure the pot is well drained. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
