Magnolia liliiflora Nigra was introduced from Japan as long ago as 1861 by J. P. Veitch and in 1907 was awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. A lovely, compact form of deciduous Magnolia with large flowers of slender tulip shape and deep vinous purple outside with a creamy white stained purple inside, borne freely over a long period from late April to June and occasionally, sporadically to autumn. Magnolia liliiflora Nigra generally produces flowers at a younger age than most other Magnolias. Easy to grow in most fertile soils, except chalky soils, in full sun or semi shade. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can very successfully be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
This listing is for well established, multi-branched, second year plants.
