Ilex aquifolium in its various forms are native to much of Europe, North Africa and western Asia. Ilex aquifolium Argentea Marginata has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a superb large, very hardy, evergreen shrub or small tree, leaves are green with a striking white margins which are flushed pink when young. Holly trees are dioecious, which means that male and female flowers are produced on separate trees. Ilex aquifolium Argentea Marginata is a female variety, so a male tree in the vicinity is needed to produce berries. Any Holly will do, just needs to be male. A lovely addition to any garden and particularly in winter when the foliage and berries add colour to an otherwise drab scene. Makes an excellent hedge. Easy to grow in any reasonable soil in full sun or semi shade. Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot. When growing in a pot or other container use a good quality compost Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12 - 14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
