Cercis Canadensis Forest Pansy-Red Bud in 5 L Pot

Cercis canadensis originate from south east Canada, eastern USA and north east Mexico. Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It is a superb small, deciduous tree and a much sought after selection, grown primarily for its stunning foliage. Glorious heart shaped leaves emerge a glossy, vibrant ruby red and darken to a rich purple plum shade by summer. In autumn they turn really striking shades of orange, red, yellow and purple. In the autumn sun some leaves appear to be translucent while others reflect the light. To show this off to best effect plant in a position where the sun can backlight the foliage in autumn. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, cluster of pink pea like flowers are clustered along the branches. This North American Redbud prefers a full sun location but will happily grow in semi or dappled shade. Tolerant of most moist, well drained soils. This plant is quite shallow rooted so should be planted where the soils is not likely to be compacted by heavy foot traffic. Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade, become too packed and choke the roots.
