Forsythia are native to much of eastern Asia and were named after William Forsyth, an 18th century Scottish botanist and founder member of the Royal Horticultural Society. The variety "Lynwood" was discovered in a garden in Northern Ireland in 1938 and subsequently granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Forsythia must be about as widely planted and known as any shrub. The distinct and stunning effect of the deep yellow bell shaped flowers on leafless branches can be seen all across the Uk (and many other countries) in early spring. One of the true spring heralds! Very easy to grow in almost any soil in sun or semi shade, in the garden or in a pot or container. In containers use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade; become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12-14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost. A vigorous grower that will need pruning. Older branches should be cut back to near ground level to encourage new flowering branches. This can be done soon after flowering. These are good size multi branched plants between 18 and 24 months old. Not cheaper single stem recently rooted cuttings in 9cm pots.
