Cotinus coggygria Royal Purple - Smoke Bush, Plant in 9 cm Pot

A most beautiful addition to any garden. The original Cotinus coggygria was introuced to the Uk aorund 1665 from the far east. Royal Purple is a RHS Award of Garden Merit winning, hardy, deciduous, selected form, the orignation of which appears unknown. Perhaps one of the most vibrant of purple coloured plants you will see in the garden and its attraction is not limited to the colour of its foliage. In June and July vast numbers of tiny fawn coloured flowers are produced on large plumes. Later they turn a light grey giving the appearance, especially when viewed with the sun behind them, of a cloud of smoke, hence the common name of Smoke Bush. In autumn the leaves turn lovely hues of orange and red. Royal Purple will also make an excellent quality hedge and and can be clipped into shape without harm. If you like to keep your hedge well manicured all year then this will be at the expense of the flowers! Easy to grow in almost any soil and full sun or partial shade. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring.
