Stachyurus praecox are native to much of east Asia. It was discovered in Japan around 1864 by the German explorer and Physician Philippine Von Siebold and subsequently granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. A lovely medium to large, hardy, deciduous shrub that flowers in the early spring before the leaves emerge and when most other deciduous plants are still dormant. Small, dainty, creamy yellow, cup shaped flowers are densely clustered along stiff racemes that are produced in abundance. The flowers are fragrant with a scent similar to the common Primrose. As a mature plant Stachyurus praecox has a slightly arching form and in autumn produces lovely autumn colours of oranges and yellows. Easy to grow in almost all soils in sun or semi shade. Can easily be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmocote Pro, or similar, controlled release fertiliser of 8 - 9 month duration added in spring. One application will provide sufficient nutrient for the whole year. Prune only to control growth, immediately after flowering when the danger of hard frost has passed.
