Nandina orginates from China and Japan and is an unusual monotipic genus (only plant in it's genus) which is frequently referred to as a type of Bamboo. This is quite misleading as the plant has no relationship to bamboo, well except the fact they are both plants! It is a member of the same family as Berberis. Nandina domestica Gulf Stream features a variety of leaf colours on a fairly dense, evergreen plant. New growth is bronze with orange tints. Older leaves range from blue-green to gold and red. In warm summers conical panicles of tiny, fragrant, white flowers with golden anthers can appear in spring, occasionally followed by red berries. Does not flower reliably in all but the warmest parts of the Uk. Gulf Stream is a tough plant, tolerant of urban conditions. Unlike other heavenly bamboos, it is bushy and compact. It makes a fine informal hedge or can be used as a foundation planting. Easy to grow in full sun or semi shade in most free draining soils. They can be used in a mixed planting, as a central specimen plant or in a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality, well drained compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8 -9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
