Morus nigra or Black Mulberry is native to south west Asia and is believed to have been grown in England for the first time in the early 16th Century. Originally it was planted as food for silkworms but it quickly became apparent that the White Mulberry fulfilled this need far better than the Black. Today it is planted for its picturesque looks and excellent fruit. If you want to plant a tree for posterity this has to be one you might choose as these trees, unlike their White Mulberry cousin, last for many centuries. Eventually making highly attractive knarled trees with deeply fissured bark. White catkins in early summer are followed by delicious dark purple almost black edible fruit. Mid green foliage turns an attractive yellow in autumn. A superb tree with a lot of history! Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or container. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
