Native to east and central Asia the White Mulberry is believed to have been introduced to the UK around 1596. Its main use in cultivation; based on sheer numbers in production; is as a food source for silkworms, however it is an attractive tree with light green leaves and gnarled bark on older specimens. Fruit starts white; turning red and occasionally black. Sweet when ripe and good to eat. Trees should be planted in groups of three where no other Mulberries are in the vicinity to ensure pollination. The white Mulberry is considerably faster in growth than the Black Mulberry and produces fruit much earlier and more abundantly, but does not have anything like the longevity of the Black Mulberry. Of interest the pollen of the Mulberry is propelled from the plants by an "elastic" arrangement in the structure of the stamens and exits at around half the speed of sound making it the fastest known plant movement in the world! Morus alba can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or container. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
