Juglans nigra, Black Walnut, is native to much of the Americas South East Europe and South East Asia and was introduced into the UK. around 1686 and was awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. These trees have been cultivated in the Uk. for many hundreds of years. They are prized for their superior quality wood, delicious nuts and beautiful ornamental stature. An eventually large, deciduous, slow growing tree with a characteristic domed head and architectural, large pinnate leaves, bronze when emerging, lush green in summer, turning an attractive yellow in autumn. Male flowers are in drooping catkins and the female flowers are terminal, usually in pairs, ripening in the autumn into a fruit with a green, semi-fleshy husk and a brown, corrugated edible walnut. Young trees have a silvery bark which becomes bronzed and deeply fissured with maturity. It prefers a full sun location in almost any fertile soil. Please be aware that most other plants will not grow under Juglans trees as the fallen leaves and husks contain Juglone, a natural herbicide. Horses should not be allowed to eat the fruit which is believed to cause Laminitis. A lovely tree, not as abundant in fruit as the more traditional Juglans regia, but fruit is larger and of better quality and the tree noticeably more impressive. It can be container grown but will eventually require a very large container with good quality soil based compost. Large well established plants branched, 5-6 years old and approx. 80 -110 cm tall exc. the pot
