Ilex aquifolium is native to the Uk. western and southern Europe, northwest Africa, and southwest Asia. Madame Briot is one of the most attractive of the garden Ilex and has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. A large evergreen shrub or small tree, leaves are green, spiny and mottled and margin with dark yellow, the mottling is very distinct and a lovely creamy yellow when young. This variety also has deep purple stems that make an excellent foil to the leaves. As a female variety it will produce deep red berries that contrast beautifully with the foliage. Holly trees are dioecious, which means that male and female flowers are produced on separate trees. A superb addition to the garden, bringing colour all year round and especially in winter when it can be very drab. Easy to grow in full sun or semi shade in most soils except very dry or very wet. Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot. When growing in a pot or other container use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12 - 14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost Please note: The images we use are designed to show the features that the plant is usually appreciated for.
