Ilex aquifolium Ingramii - Variegated Holly - Plant in 9 cm Pot

Ilex aquifolium are native to much of Europe, north Africa and western Asia. Ilex aquifolium Ingramii is an attractive, dense, evergreen small tree or shrub. The shoots emerge deep purple. The new growth is pinky white and the spiny leaves mature to flecked and margined with cream. Holly trees are dioecious, which means that male and female flowers are produced on separate trees. Ilex aquifolium Ingramii is a male variety so this plant can be used as a pollinator for female varieties such as Ilex a. Argentea Marginata or Ilex a. Gold King. A wonderful plant for all year round interest and particularly in winter when colour is in short supply. Makes an excellent security hedge. Easy to grow in any reasonable soil that is not very dry or very wet, in full sun or semi shade. Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot. When growing in a pot or other container use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots.
