Hydrangea aspera originated from the Himalayas, west and central China, Taiwan, Sumatra and Java and were introduced to the Uk in 1908 by Ernest Wilson. Villosa is one of the most splendid Hydrangeas, indeed some have described it as the most beautiful of all shrubs! However you perceive it, the fact it makes a stunning statement cannot be denied! A large shrub, but more compact than aspera, with dark green leaves. Stems, leaves and flower stalks are densely villous (hairy) making an almost "Soft" effect. The domed lilac blue inflorescences are produced in abundance in July and August and bear prettily toothed ray florets; they have an almost luminescent quality in fading sunlight. Easy to grow in full sun to full shade in moist, free draining, acid to neutral soils. A wonderful accent plant in the borders or in large containers. In containers use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. This plant flowers on second year wood, so do not prune until after it has flowered!
