Hydrangea aspera originated from the Himalayas, west and central China, Taiwan, Sumatra and Java and were introduced to the Uk in 1908 by Ernest Wilson. Hydrangea aspera Rosemary Foster is an exciting new cultivar bred by Maurice Foster in Kent and named after his wife. A superb cultivar, very hardy, selected for its uniform flowering, even on very young plants and compact growth. The stunning flowers are produced in large upturned corymbs of rich mauve blue with white ray florets, from June to September and will be the same colours in any soil. The large leaves have great architectural presence, emerging chocolate brown, later deep grey green with felted stems. The leaves turn to amber and golden hues in autumn. However you perceive it, the fact it makes a stunning statement cannot be denied! A wonderful accent plant in the borders or in large containers. Easy to grow in full sun or semi shade in fertile, moist, acid to neutral soils. In containers use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
