Salix x sepulcralis var. Chrysocoma or Golden Weeping Willow, are native to much of the northern hemisphere but probably evolved in ancient China. Introduced into the British Isles around 1888 it has since been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit and can be seen all over the Uk. Salix x sepulcralis var. Chrysocoma is probably our most beautiful, hardy, weeping tree. A medium size tree, with a spreading head, it has a stout upright trunk with arching branches and very long, golden yellow, weeping branchlets. Yellow catkins appear in spring along with the attractive, lanceolate leaves that turn golden yellow in autumn. Even in deepest winter this tree provides a pleasing form in the landscape. Easy to grow in full sun or semi shade. It is not fussy as to soil type, as long as the soil is moist or wet, which means it is well suited to heavy clay soils and is very often seen growing, to great effect, close to water. Our 2 L size trees are approx. 80 to 100 cm tall with a distinct leader which you will need to tie to a stake to form the main trunk of the tree. There will be many side shoots that can be left and will eventually die off as the plant develops tree form, however they are best removed to increase the rate at which the tree develops a trunk. Please also note, these trees are not grafted onto dwarfing root stocks, so are not be suitable for small gardens. They are however tolerant of hard pruning which is best undertaken during winter to control growth.
