Magnolia Black Tulip is a rare and expensive Magnolia. Bred in New Zealand by Mark Jury, whose life quest has been to breed red Magnolias. This particular variety arrived as a cross between Magnolia Vulcan and Magnolia Iolanthe, both in themselves major achievements from the same breeder. Black Tulip is a truly magnificent small, deciduous tree. In spring, before the extra large foliage emerges, abundant dark purple, perfectly formed, cup shaped flowers smother the tree. They hold their shape and are relatively long lasting. It is not uncommon for the plant to bloom again during late summer and autumn. Black Tulip is on of the darkest known Magnolias. Easy to grow in a sun or semi shade location in most acid to neutral soils. Will not grow well in alkaline soils. Planted in a good location it is not likely to need pruning but this can be done sparingly after flowering and when all danger of frost has passed. Really a stunningly beautiful tree. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality ericaceous compost. This plant is not ericaceous but grows much better in an acidic compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.

These are grafted plants to ensure they are true to type and long lasting. They are 70 to 80cm tall, three years old and single stem.
