Fatsia japonica are native to Japan and Southern Korea and truly fulfil the description of an architectural plant. Fatsia japonica Spider's Web is a recent introduction, more compact and somewhat slower growing than the green species and has beautiful large green palmate foliage, liberally splashed with white, all year round, which makes for a truly tropical effect and is a great background for the round flower heads that emerge above the foliage at the end of the branches in September and October. Spiders Web is hardy to around minus 15C and easy to grow in most fertile moist soils in semi to full shade. A welcome floral addition to the garden when little else is flowering. It is just as at home as border plant as a stand alone specimen and can make an excellent display grown in a pot or other container either outside, or in a conservatory. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you prune and feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
