Fargesia robusta (Fargesia scabrida, misapplied) are native to China. They are a very decorative, evergreen and hardy bamboo rarely exceeding 3.5 mtrs in height. Fargesia robusta Asian Wonder is a superb cultivar with rusty orange sheaths and striking red stems on young, mature canes, that contrast beautifully with the narrow, graceful, deep green leaves. The large open clumps make this an excellent choice as a stand alone specimen, as a mixed planting or as a hedge or screen. This is also a first rate Bamboo for pot growing. Easy to grow in a sunny to semi shade location, prefers shade from strongest sunlight, in most fertile, moist, free draining soils. As these bamboo are quite shallow rooted they may need some irrigation in severe drought. If planting in a pot or other container use a John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
