Please Note. During January we remove all the foilage to encourage strong spring growth of new fronds and to remove the remaining deteriorating old fronds. If you order during this period the plant will arrive without fronds. Ferns are a delight for any garden that can provide their basic requirements. They fill that space that few other plants will thrive in and at the same time bring colour and form to please. A rich, always moist but free draining, soil, with plenty of organic matter, in a shady location is ideal. A small amount of sun early or late in the day will not harm but may darken the colour of the foliage. Dryopteris wallichiana originates from the Mexican highlands through South America and Hawaii. Dryopteris wallichiana is a very alluring, semi evergreen fern that has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. This fern produces butter yellow, shuttlecock like fronds on upright, hairy stems, maturing to a polished green with pale undersides and a distinct black rib. Grow in semi to full shade in fertile, moist, free draining soils. Dryopteris wallichiana will grow in alkaline soils. Makes a dramatic statement in a woodland garden or under deciduous trees and established specimens will even grow in dry shade. Ferns can be grown very successfully in pots and containers as long as you can reproduce the basic requirements. Use a good quality compost. Ferns generally require a constant feed of nutrients so please ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8 - 9 month applied in the early spring as growth begins. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. Ensure the pot or container is placed in a shady location and avoid it drying out. Place on a bed of shingle or similar in a tray or other container that will hold water. Keep the tray filled with water but not so much that it is touching the bottom of the pot. This will help to keep the air around the plant humid. In hot weather regular misting or damping down the area around the fern(s) will be appreciated!
