Cornus alba are a long standing favourite for colour in the winter garden. Cornus stolonifera Flaviramea has striking yellow stems in winter. Often good autumn colour with leaves turning yellow. Flowers are small and white, in upturned croymbs and are followed by deep blue berries that are attractive to birds. Very easy to grow in full sun to semi shade and most soils, very tolerant of wet soils. It is important to prune most of the stems back to near ground level on mature plants to ensure a plentiful supply of new stems. The young stem have the best colour. Can be used anywhere but look at their best planted together with the red, black and vermilion stem varieties, where they provide a vivid contrast.
