A great plant and especially if you are looking to create that tropical/Mediterranean effect. Native to Australia this palm has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is very easy to grow. In southern areas it will survive quite easily in sunny sheltered locations, the evidence of which can be seen by the large number of mature specimens! In northern areas it requires a sheltered protected location. The bigger trees with more than 1 mtr of trunk are hardier than younger plants. More mature plants produce masses of small fragrant creamy flowers in late summer. Most people like the fragrance but to a very small minority it is not so pleasant. You won't harm the tree by cutting off the flower stems. A large tree in a good year can produce over 1 million seeds! This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container in a greenhouse or large conservatory. If in a pot it can stay outside over winter but ensure the compost never freezes more than around the edges. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12-14 months applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
