Arguably one of the most beautiful of all flowering shrubs. The species was originally introduced from China by Sir Joseph Banks in 1869 since when they have been an extremely popular part of the British gardening scene. Chaenomeles x superba Cameo is a lovely, compact, dense, variety. The superb double peach flowers are produced in great profusion in early spring just before the leaves appear and are followed by golden yellow fruit*. This variety flowers up to two weeks earlier than most. Traditionally grown against a wall but just as at home as a semi-prostrate plant in the border. A Quince is a must for early spring colour. Easy to grow in full sun or semi shade in most moist, free draining soils. If you grow in a container use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8- 9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. To display at its best provide some supports/wires and train the branches laterally. *While these fruits are edible they are best used for Jam making. The true edible Quince is called Cydonia oblonga. This listing is for second year, multi branched plants, that have been pruned to ensure further branching next spring.
