Castanea sativa or Sweet or Spanish Chestnut are native to southern Europe and Asia Minor and are cultivated widely across the globe. A long lived, ( at least one example near Mount Etna is thought to be 2000 years old!) fast growing, deciduous tree that has been cultivated since ancient times for its edible nuts and excellent coppiced timber. In addition to its commercial uses, Castanea sativa is an attractive ornamental tree that provides a natural habitat for various wildlife. Elongated, deep green, serrated leaves appear in spring and turn attractive coppery brown in autumn. Male and female flowers are both present in June and July. Male flowers are white and fragrant in long racemes while the female flowers are small and green. Castanea is hardy to around -15C but luxuriates in sunny, mild locations in fertile, moist, free draining neutral to acidic soils. While it will grow well in very acid soils it will not tolerate alkaline soil. A superb tree that requires plenty of room to develop its full potential but can also be regularly coppiced.
