Buddleja are now perhaps one of the best known and loved of all garden shrubs, as well as having naturalised in just about every crack and crevis available across the Uk! Buddleja Butterfly Tower is a hybrid cultivar bred in the Uk. Buddleja davidii Empire Blue is an old cultivar, raised by Karle A. Lucal and introduced by the Good & Reese nursery, Ohio, in 1941. It was granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. A large, semi evergreen shrub, a great survivor, almost regardless of the conditions and of course it will attract as many butterflies as you have in your area! Empire Blue will produce a mass of very fragrant, rich violet blue flowers, with an orange eye long arching panicles, from July to October. To achieve this long flowering period, with these and other Buddlejas, it is important to prune out dead heads. You should also prune each spring soon after new growth begins to encourage maximum flowering. Easy to grow in a full sun or light shade location almost an soil that does not water log. This plant can be used in a mixed planting, as a central specimen plant or in a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
