Knap Hill Hybrid Azaleas produce some of our most spectacular displays in late spring. They were originally developed during the latter half of the 19th century at Knap Hill nursery in Surrey by the well known nurseryman Anthony Waterer and then more extensively, during the 20th century, by Lionel de Rothschild at Exbury Nursery in Hampshire. These cultivars are often referred to as Exbury Hybrids. Since then many new hybrids have been developed. Hotspur Red is beautiful open Azalea with rich orange red flowers with a deeper orange flare in the throat, in May and June. One important fact to note with virtually all Azaleas and Rhododendrons is the fact they are very intolerant of chalk/lime. Even small amounts will turn them chlorotic and unhealthy. Regular use of a suitable tonic (sequestered iron) will combat the effects of low levels of lime but it is far better to plant in lime free acid soils. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have shallow fibrous roots so an annual mulching with organic matter is very beneficial. This is best applied in autumn. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality ericaceous John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
