Native to the Himalayas and much of East Asia the Aucubas are beautiful architectural plants that will happily grow in the most shady of locations, thus bringing colour to the dullest of corners! I should perhaps mention that the best variegations are maintained in the more open situations, but they will not disappear, even in heavy shade. They are tough hardy plants that will tolerate virtually any location, except heavily waterlogged. Aucubas come in both male and female varieties so the male ones, as you might expect, will not produce berries. It also follows that there would need to be a male in the vicinity to pollinate a female, otherwise again, no berries! As bees tend to forage the same species of plant at one time and most urban areas will have a male plant somewhere in the vicinity, pollination is not much of a worry, if you would like berries. The plant is primarily grown for its foliage. Crotonifolia is a female variety and has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. It is probably the best coloured of all the spotted laurels. It is not prone to reversion but if you see any branches producing plain green leaves they should be removed right back to the main stem as soon as they are seen. If not the plant will slowly turn green! Can be used in a mixed planting, as an excellent quality hedge, as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or container. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
This listing is for very well established, large, (for pot size) multiple branched, second year plants.
