Ferns are a delight for any garden that can provide their basic requirements. They fill that space that few other plants will thrive in and at the same time bring colour and form to please. A rich always moist but free draining neutral or acid soil with plenty of organic matter in a shady location is ideal. A small amount of sun early or late in the day will not harm but may darken the colour of the foliage. Athyrium filix-femina Victoriae is perhaps one of the most spectacular of all cultivars in its magnificent frond architecture. According to Dr. John Mickel, former curator of ferns at the New York Botanical Garden and author of "Ferns for American Gardens", it is really the "Queen of Green". This superb selection has fronds whose pinnae (leaflets) criss cross to form x's and has crested pinnae tips Terrific in a shady area of the garden or in mixed containers. Plants are easily divided in spring every 3 to 5 years. Ferns can be grown very successfully in pots and containers as long as you can reproduce the basic requirements and especially the need for constant moisture. These are well established plants in their third year with large crowns and multiple fronds in season. Please note: The images we use are designed to show the features that the plant is usually appreciated for. They are not representative of the size of plant you will receive.
