Native to Japan China and Korea the Acer palmatums were introduced from Japan around the middle 1800's. Acer palmatums are small, deciduous trees that have to be among the most beautiful of all our garden trees. Acer palmatum Phoenix is a superb Acer for all year round interest. Foliage emerges a pinky red turning light green with red margins in summer, then lovely orange yellows in autumn. The winter bark, on more mature specimens, is a beautiful, vivid orange pink with slivery white "Snake bark" striations. A lovely Acer with interest for much of the year. Easy to grow in dappled shade in acidic to neutral, fertile, free draining soils. Will grow in slightly alkaline soils but colours will not be so good. Does not grow well in chalky soils. Really a very beautiful tree and ideal for patios, general planting and gardens. Very popular as a Bonsai subject. If growing in a pot or other container, use a good quality ericaceous compost. These plants are not ericaceous and can be grown in ordinary compost however they will grow better and give better colour in neutral to acid soil. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires.
These are well established plants 75 to 100cm tall exc, the pot.
