Native to Japan China and Korea the Acer palmatums were introduced from Japan around the middle 1800's. Acer palmatums have to be among the most beautiful of all our garden trees. Acer palmatum Bloodgood is one of the best of the purple leaved Japanese Acers and has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Rich reddish purple leaves that hold their colour well in summer turn to a stunning bright red in autumn. Attractive red winged fruits appear in autumn and in winter the structure of the tree brings grace to the garden. Acer palmatum Bloodgood has a dense, upright habit that forms an attractive small tree. Bloodgood can only be reliably reproduced by vegetative propagation. Cutting raised plants often die in the first 5 years. To ensure a full life span and true to type and therefore colour, these plants are grafted. Really a very beautiful tree and ideal for small gardens. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality ericaceous compost. These plants are not ericaceous and can be grown in ordinary compost however they will grow better and give better colour in neutral to acid soil.
